Exhaust Hangers

Exhaust hangers are seldom replaced by drivers not because they don't fail or wear but more because most people don't realise what problems they have are actually caused by them.

Degraded hangers will typically elongate and soften over their life allowing more and more movement of the exhaust system until they eventually fail.

A typical sign of excessive wear are Banging and Rattling noises. These can come in many forms depending on which hangers are gone but you will normally find that the exhaust will rattle against the underside of the body or against mounting points under simple manouvers i.e. Going over speed bumps, pot holes, starting the engine (Check engine mounts before suspecting exhaust), heavy cornering and more. Another sign is a melted bumper at the sides of the exhaust tip, this shows that the exhaust is flexing too much and is resting against the bodywork.
